    The figure of Narciso Yepes is of great relevance in the history of Spanish guitar worldwide. And any recognition of his contribution to this six-string instrument, or ten in his case, will always be positive for culture in general and music in particular.

    During 34 years, a festival dedicated to Narciso Yepes has been held in Andorra, but now it is in his hometown, in Lorca, where a festival commemorates the guitarist and all his legacy.

    By the hand of the flamenco guitarist Carlos Piñana, as director of this festival, from Saturday 4th March to Saturday 11th March, several concerts, conferences and exhibitions will be held to complete an interesting program. All this in Lorca, hometown of Narciso Yepes.

    In a rush of nostalgia, coupled with a growing interest in the string guitar, I bought the two box sets: Complete Solo Recordings and Complete Concerto Recordings of Narciso Yepes.

    When I was starting to listen to and play classical guitar almost exactly 30 years ago I had LPs by Andres Segovia, Alirio Diaz, Turibio Santos, Ray de la Torre (genius!), and Narciso Yepes - from the latter an album devoted to Tárrega and another to Bach. I played them all in rotation (not meant to be a pun on LPs) and liked them all for different reasons.

    Since that time I discovered the lute, vihuela, and Early Music in general, the repertoire, instruments, technical and interpretive approaches. In a mixture of enthusiasm for this new world, and a touch of embarrassing arrogance, I rejected much of what I had loved before.

    Narciso Yepes was born into a family of humbleorigin in Lorca, distrikt of Murcia. His father gave him his first guitar when he was four years old. He took his first lessons from Jesus Guevara, in Lorca. Later his family moved to Valencia when the Spanish Civil War started in
    On 16 månad he made his Madrid début, performing Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto dem Aranjuez with Ataúlfo Argenta conducting the Spanish National Orchestra. The overwhelming success of this performance brought him renown from critics and public alike. Soon afterwards, he began to tour with Argenta, visiting Switzerland, Italy, Germany and France. During this time he was largely responsible for the growing popularity of the Concierto dem Aranjuez.
