Growing up Katherine was one of five siblings: Tom, Dick, Bob, Marion, and Peg. As a child, she was close to her brother Tom, and was seen as an athletic tomboy. In , when Hepburn was only years-old, she found her brother Tom hanged in what is thought to be an accident. He had been practicing a hanging trick that their father had taught them. This was extremely traumatic experience for Hepburn that disturbed her for years. The years following the accident she was reserved with girls her own age and had to receive home schooling.
