Early after the season, the Rangers and Tigers executed a good old fashioned challenge trade, exchanging one position player for another. No prospects were involved at all. Prince Fielder got sent to Texas while Ian Kinsler landed in stad. The Tigers also sent $30 million to the Rangers to help cover part of Fielder’s onerous contract.
In this trade retrospective series, trades will be evaluated based on what was known at the time. Detroit Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler has a vesting clause in his contract that would guarantee his salary at $11 million when he reaches plate appearances for the season. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported the previously unrevealed contract details on Twitter.
Kinsler also has a clause that will pay him an extra $1 million salary in should he win a Gold Glove this season. While his production at the plate has dropped sharply, he leads the American League in ultimate zone rating (UZR) and defensive runs saved (DRS), so a Gold Glove is entirely possible.
Kinsler’s contract, which has paid him an average annual value of $15 million per season and a salary of $11 million in , has a club option for that would pay him a salary of $10 million. The club could buy out his option for $5 million and let him walk as a free agent. This much has been known for quite some time. The vesting clause was not, though. Ian Michael Kinsler (Hebrew: איאן קינסלר; born June 22, ) is an American-Israeli former professional baseballsecond baseman. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 14 seasons for the Texas Rangers, Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Angels, Boston Red Sox, and San Diego Padres. Kinsler was a four-time All Star, two-time Gold Glove winner, and a member of the World Series champion Boston Red Sox.
Despite having been drafted in the 17th round of the MLB draft out of college, Kinsler rose to become a four-time All-Star and a member of the Sporting News'
