    Songwriter Johnny Mandel, an Oscar and Grammy winner whose compositions included “The Shadow Of Your Smile” and theme song to the film and TV series M*A*S*H, died June 29 at his home in Ojai, California, from a cardiac ailment, the Associated Press reported. He was

    A recipient of the NEA Jazz Masters fellowship, Mandel won an Oscar and a Grammy for “The Shadow Of Your Smile,” a song he wrote with Paul Francis Webster and which appeared on the soundtrack to the film The Sandpiper. He also composed the music for “Suicide Is Painless,” which was used as the theme song for both the film M*A*S*H and later the TV series (–’83).

    Early in his career, Mandel played trombone and trumpet with the bands of Jimmy Dorsey and Count Basie.

    He later became an in-demand arranger, working with Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand and Natalie Cole.
