William T. Ellis
American politician
William Thomas Ellis (July 24, – January 8, ) was a U.S. Representative from Kentucky, United States.
Early life and family
[edit]William Ellis was born near Knottsville, Kentucky, on July 24, [1] He was one of two sons born Luther R. and Mary M. (Kellum) Ellis.[2]
Ellis was educated in the common schools until age sixteen.[1] On October 5, , he enlisted as a private in the First Kentucky Confederate Cavalry.[3] This unit became a part of the Orphan Brigade.[1] Ellis eventually rose to become a non-commissioned officer in command of scouts.[3] He served until the end of the war and mustered out on April 21, [1]
After the war, Ellis resumed his studies at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Daviess County.[1] To defray the cost of his education, he worked during the summer months.[3] He studied lag, supporting han själv by serving as principal of Mount Etn

William T. Ellis,born in Daviess County, Ky., July 24, , was a son of Luther L. and Mary M. (Kallam) Ellis, natives of Shelby and Daviess counties, Ky. His father died in March, , and his mother in March, , leaving two children – William T. and J.W. Ellis, now of Masonville. William T. was reared and educated in Daviess County. Before he was sixteen years old he enlisted in the Confederate army, in the First Kentucky Cavalry; was mustered in Oct. 5, , and served during the war, surrendering April 21, At the close of the war he was a non-commissioned officer, in command of scouts. After the war he returned home and attended school the rest of the year and , working during vacation to pay his board and tuition. The latter part of and till the spring of he taught school near Whitesville in connection with his studies. During the years ’69 he read law during his leisure time while engaged in teaching.
