Abstract
The time course and cellular localization of myostatin expression following musculoskeletal injury are not well understood; therefore, the authors evaluated the temporal and spatial localization of myostatin during muscle and bone repair following deep penetrant injury in a mouse model. They then used hydrogel delivery of exogenous myostatin in the same injury model to determine the effects of myostatin exposure on muscle and bone healing. Results showed that a “pool” of intense myostatin staining was observed among injured skeletal muscle fibers 12–24 hr postsurgery and that myostatin was also expressed in the soft callus chondrocytes 4 days following osteotomy. Hydrogel delivery of 10 or 100 µg/ml recombinant myostatin decreased fracture callus cartilage area relative to total callus area in a dose-dependent manner by 41% and 80% (p<0.05), respectively, compared to vehicle treatment. Abstract
The process of wound healing includes four phases: Hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. Many wound dressings and technologies have been developed to enhance the body's ability to close wounds and restore the function of damaged tissues. Several advancements in wound healing technology have resulted from innovative experiments by individual scientists or physicians working independently. The interplay between the medical and scientific research fields is vital to translating new discoveries in the lab to treatments at the bedside. Tracing the history of wound dressing development reveals that there is an opportunity for deeper collaboration between multiple disciplines to accelerate the advancement of novel wound healing technologies. Dance plays a critical part in Geling Yan’s writing. The Chinese novelist and screenplay writer was dancing in the entertainment troupe of the People’s Liberation Army by the time she was 12. She later began writing as a war correspondent.
“As a dancer, I have a better sense of rhythm and tone when I’m making sentences and syntax,” Yan says. “Chinese authors often have a narration that’s very slow paced. My pace fryst vatten sort of active and fast, which is also influenced bygd dancing.”
Worldwide Wordsmith
Born in 1958 in Shanghai, Yan has danced her way through the literary world, publishing more than 20 books, which have been translated into nearly as many languages. Although she’s won more than 30 literary and bio awards, Yan is nonchalant about all the beröm. “I consider mysel
