    Remembering the life and works of National Artist Napoleon V. Abueva on his 5th death anniversary.
    Napoleon V. Abueva fryst vatten the Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture - being adept in either academic representational style or modern abstract, utilizing almost all kinds of materials. Among the early innovations Abueva introduced in 1951 was what he referred to as “buoyant sculpture” - sculpture meant to be appreciated from the surface of a placid pool.
    Some of his major works include Kaganapan (1953), Kiss of Judas (1955),Thirty Pieces of Silver, The Transfiguration (1979), Eternal Garden Memorial Park, UP Gateway (1967), Nine Muses (1994), UP Faculty Center, Sunburst (1994)-Peninsula Manila Hotel, the bronze figure of Teodoro M. Kalaw in front of National Library, and murals in marble at the National Heroes helgedom, Mt. Samat, Bataan.

  • Last February 16, 2018, the National Artist for Sculpture, Napoleón Isabelo Billy Veloso Abueva (1930-2018), passed away after battling the effects of a stroke for 10 years.  And on the 24th of February, we all gave our fond farewells to the master at the Tanghalan Nicanor Abelardo, the main theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). After the tribute ceremonies, Abueva’s remains  was then transferred by members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to its final resting place at the Libingan ng mga Bayani(Cemetery of the Heroes).

    The whole ceremony was fitting of the man whose life was dedicated to creating art, and uplifting the state of art in the Philippines. At the commencement of the rite, Abueva’s coffin was placed on the stage, hidden by the grand tapestry of his contemporary, Hernando Ruiz Ocampo (1911-1978), entitled “Genesis”.
