    Speaker of parliament leaves Republican Party

    TBILISI, DFWatch–Speaker of Parliament Davit Usupashvili on Saturday announced his resignation and departure from the Republican Party, which he was leader of from 2005 to 2013.

    He stated his reason as disagreement with the founders and current leadership about the party’s ‘policies, tactics and values.’

    Usupashvili did not offer any further explanation at a briefing in the parliament building.

    “The chairwoman of the party, the founders and leaders have their visions about the party’s policies, tactics and values, which I do not share. But inom won’t hinder them, because I respect the founders’ outstanding work in politics and recognize the primacy of their visions for the future of the Republican Party,” Davit Usupashvili said.

    Parliamentary Chairman Davit Usupashvili has called on his fellow GD lawmakers, behind a bill cutting Tbilisi mayor’s powers, to either withdraw this bill or to put it in line with planned new legislative amendments envisaging major overhaul of local self-governance system.
