Congressman Brad Sherman Statement on Meeting with Israel Economy Minister Nir Barkat
Yesterday, I met with Israel’s Economy Minister Nir Barkat in my Washington D.C. office for an hour and a half. I began by expressing my sympathy for the 1, Israelis murdered on October 7th during Hamas’s horrific massacre and the roughly hostages who remain in Hamas captivity.
I told Minister Barkat that due to a number of factors, including the propaganda efforts of Qatar, latent antisemitism and mistakes made by the Israeli government, Israel is losing a world-wide public relations battle to baby killers.
Clearly, Israel needs a new approach. The delegitimization effort poses a real threat to the survival of the Jewish state.
For the benefit of the Palestinians, and for the benefit of Israel, I have for many months urged the Israeli government to open the Karni and Erez crossings. I commend Israel for opening the Erez crossing earlier this week.

Winter in Jerusalem, Israel, is so different than those we experienced in the US. Being used to those long Boston winters with piles of snow into June and New York where tree branches remained bare for months on end, the greenery popping up all around is always a pleasure.
When the rain stops, the sun comes out, and things turn green.
The first spotting of wild Kalaniot, anemones, is an annual favorite.
Tourists and locals are enjoying the unseasonably warm weather.
The OurCrowd Global Summit attracted 10, people to the Jerusalem International Conference Center.
I had always used this stairway to get to the entrance, but the stairs were gone this time. With so much construction in Jerusalem, you never know what you will find, or not find.
The auditorium was full for the opening plenary.
Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat was a featured speaker in the morning. Jerusalem of the ancient past appeared in this slide in his presentation, but the focus was on the future.

Israeli businessman and politician
Nir Barkat (Hebrew: נִיר בַּרְקָת; born 19 October )[2] is an Israeli businessman and politician currently serving as Minister of Economy. He served as mayor of Jerusalem between the years –[3]
Biography
[edit]Nir Barkat was raised in Jerusalem.[2] His father, Zalman, was a professor of physics at the Hebrew University. His great-grandfather came from Russia to Mandatory Palestine in the s, and died in [citation needed]
Barkat served in the Paratroopers Brigade of the Israel Defense Forces for six years (–), as well as reserve duty, and reached the rank of major. Barkat was also wounded in combat in Lebanon.[citation needed]
Barkat holds a BA in computer science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.[citation needed] He also studied for a master's degree in business ledning at the same institution, but has not completed it.[citation needed]
